Title & Level: AS/A Level Law (Level 3)

Introduction
During this course, you will study the legal system in England and Wales. At AS, you will gain an overview of how the civil and criminal courts work and learn the part played by both legal personnel, such as solicitors, and lay people, such as juries. You will also learn how laws are made, develop and change over time. At A Level, you will study aspects of the criminal law. Many other subjects go well with Law, including English, History, Sociology and Psychology.

Entry requirements
Five GCSEs at grade A* to C, but you do not have to have studied law before.

Duration
AS Level is a one year course and A Level is a two year course. Enrolment is only in September.

Career Prospects/Progression
With a qualification in Law, you could go on to Higher Education to study Law and Politics or other subjects, such as Business Studies. Alternatively, you could seek work in the legal profession, management or Local Government.  You could also consider other related professional qualifications, such as ILEX.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through examinations.  There is no coursework element.

Course Content/units
The AS course consists of two modules. 

The first, ‘Sources of Law’, considers the different types of law and how they are made. 
This is assessed by a one-hour examination taken in January. 

The second, ‘English Legal System’, considers both the civil and criminal justice system and the work of the police, solicitors, barristers, judges, magistrates and juries. 
This is assessed by a two-hour examination taken in June.

The A Level course consists of an additional two modules. 

The first, ‘Criminal Law Special Study’, involves an in depth consideration of a particular part of the criminal law and how it has developed over time. 
This is assessed by an one-and-a-half-hour examination taken in January. 

The second, ‘Criminal Law’, considers the general principles of criminal law, a range of offences including murder, manslaughter, and theft, and defences such as intoxication and self-defence. 
This is assessed by a two-hour examination taken in June.

Your learning will be supported by a wide range of materials available on-line on the College website. 

Course expenses
Textbooks - Approximately £18.  You will need to fund trips.

Trips/Residentials
As well as trips to Parliament and the Inns of Court, there are usually visits to a magistrates’ court, a County Court, a police station and a local firm of solicitors.
