Title & Level: AS/A Level Health and Social Care (Single Award) (Level 3)Introduction
This course provides a broad educational basis for Higher Education, professional training or employment within the fields of Health and Social Care. A variety of teaching approaches is used, including group work, individual research, presentations, assignment work and lectures. Units taught include Human Growth and Development, Investigating Disease and Understanding Behaviour. You are encouraged to relate theory to practice through work experience which you will undertake for at least half a day a week throughout the course. This will require you to undertake an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check (price £37).
Entry requirements
At least five GCSEs at C grade or above, including English Language at grade B and, preferably, Maths at grade C.
Duration
The A Level course is two years and the AS Level is one year. Enrolment is in September.
Career Prospects/Progression
You can progress on to university-level, or professional training specifically related to those occupations involving inter-personal skills e.g. nursing, occupational therapy, teaching, social work or youth and community work. You may also choose to go directly into employment in the care sector or into voluntary work before going on to university.
How will I be assessed?
Two-thirds of your Units are assessed through coursework portfolios and the other third by examination.

*These are the units which will be studied for the AS Level.
Course expenses
Enhanced CRB check - Currently £45. Textbooks - Approximately £22 per year. Yeovil College Polo Shirt - £12 (optional). Optional trips - Approximately £400.
Trips/Residential
There is an optional over-seas trip, designed to give you cultural and educational experience in another country. Previous destinations have included Slovenia, Venice, Prague, Slovakia and South Africa. There are also team building activities, such as visits to Thorpe Park, the coast and other activities.
