Title & Level: AS/A Level Computing (Level 3)

Introduction
The course encompasses key topics in the field of IT, teaching you both hardware and software aspects of Computing. You will finish the course with an appreciation of the underlying principles of modern computer systems and software development using a range of programming languages and software packages.  

Entry requirements
Maths and English GCSEs at grade A* to C and an interest in programming. GCSE ICT is not required.

Duration
AS Level is a one year course and A Level is a two year course. Enrolment is only in September.

Career Prospects/Progression
This course is excellent preparation for degree-level study in computing as well as providing valuable skills for Science and Mathematics students. Former students have gone on to study Computer Science at established universities or to follow courses in other computer-related disciplines. The skills learnt on the course, such as abstract thinking, problem-solving, algorithmic and mathematical reasoning, are also of use in many other degrees. There may be an opportunity for a full A Level, subject to numbers.

How will I be assessed?
Through coursework and examinations, where Unit 1 is an on-screen examination allowing candidates to demonstrate their programming skills through a pre-released problem-solving scenario.

Course Content/units

AS Level:
Unit 1 - problem-solving, programming, data representation and practical exercise
Unit 2 – Computer components, the stored program concept and the Internet

A Level - above plus:
Unit 3 – Operating systems, databases and networking
Unit 4 – Computing practical project

Course expenses
Up to £25 for consumables and resources.
