Business Studies

Title & Level: AS/A Level Business Studies (Level 3)

Introduction
This course will give you a good understanding of the key operational functions within Business.  The subject is ideal for students who have an interest in the ‘real world’ and current affairs. You will develop a critical understanding of organisations, the markets they serve and the management of organisations in a dynamic external environment. Topics studied include: Marketing, Accounting and Finance; People and Operations Management; External Influences and Strategy.

Entry requirements
Standard entry requirements and GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above.

Duration
The AS Level is a one year course and the A Level is a two year course. Enrolment is only in September.

Career Prospects/Progression
After passing the AS Level, you can go on to complete the full A Level. After this, many students choose to continue their studies at university or apply for higher level trainee positions in a variety of businesses.  Previous students have been extremely successful in gaining training positions with major local employers.  Some students who have achieved this qualification have gone on to become successful entrepreneurs. 

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through four exams over the two year period to completion of the A Level.

1. Planning and Financing a Business e.g. Market Research
2. Managing a Business e.g. Managing and Motivating People 

A Level
3. Strategies for Success e.g. Making Project Investment Decisions
4. Business Environment e.g. Green and Carbon Footprint Issues

Course expenses
Approximately £18 for text books.  You will also need to contribute to trips.  The international residentials are optional.

Trips/Residential
A key aspect to this course is seeing businesses in action.  As such, you will take part in visits to significant local employers on a regular basis, as well as trips further afield to international companies.  There is also an optional, annual residential to an international business conference held at Disneyland, Paris.  Other destinations have included New York, Barcelona and Berlin
