Title & Level: AS Level Information and Communication Technology (ICT) (Level 3)Introduction
This course will introduce you to the fundamentals of ICT, providing a foundation from which to extend your knowledge of this growing area. Through practical, hands-on work and theory you will develop an understanding of the principles of problem solving using ICT. You will learn about the range of applications and the effects of their use. The course aims for you to be able to apply this knowledge and understanding when developing ICT solutions to problems.
Entry requirements
GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above. GCSE ICT is advantageous, but any Level 2 ICT qualification or ICT experience will be considered.
Duration
AS Level is a one year course. Enrolment is only in September.
Career Prospects/Progression
The course gives a solid foundation in the fundamentals of ICT. It complements many other A Level subjects e.g. Mathematics, Sciences and Humanities-based subjects, since ICT now appears in a great many diverse areas. The study of ICT also helps further study at university. Equally, the job prospects for students who achieve good grades are promising, particularly with the experience of state-of-the-art hardware and software which they have gained during the course.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is via a combination of coursework assessment (40%) and a written examination (60%). There is one written exam and one item of coursework.
Course Content/units
The course consists following two modules:
• Unit G061: Information, Systems and Applications
• Unit G062: Structured ICT Tasks
You will spend about 4.25 hours per week, split equally between theoretical and practical work. You should plan to spend about this amount of time again on the subject away from the class if you are to achieve a good level of performance overall.
Course expenses
You need to have a 1Gb USB stick.
