Title & Level: AS/A Level Photography (Level 3)
Introduction
This course introduces you to the basics of photography, including SLR cameras (both digital and traditional), composition and structure, viewpoint, depth of field and darkroom work. During the courses, you will keep notebooks and research sheets which will include primary visual and written research and the practical development of ideas.
Entry requirements
Standard entry requirements for A Levels apply. You also need a keen interest in the subject.
Duration
The AS level is a one year course and the A Level is a two year course. Enrolment is only in September.
Career Prospects/Progression
This course is good preparation if you intend to apply for an Art Foundation course or other specific Higher Education qualifications, such as those available through Yeovil College and the UCY. You can also progress to further training or employment in related areas within the Creative Industries.
How will I be assessed?
The coursework and personal study are both marked internally and externally moderated. The examiner marks the controlled test. Assessment is continuous throughout the year.
Course Content/units
The AS candidate takes Units 1, 2 and 3 in Year 1 and the A Level candidate takes Units1, 2, 3 in Year 1 and 4, 5 and 6 in Year 2.
Unit 1 (10 weeks)
A module based on observation of people in different settings. You will undertake research to explore the relationship between people and different environments. You will also visit a photography exhibition.
Unit 2 (10 weeks)
A module that requires you to work in one or more area(s) of photography, for example, Landscape, Still Life or The Natural World, Experimental Imagery.
Unit 3 - Controlled Test
Four weeks preparatory period five hour exam. Two hours one day, three hours another day spent mainly in the Darkroom.

Year 1
Unit 1 - Coursework
A Level = 15% of the mark
AS Level = 30% of the mark
Unit 2 - Personal Investigation
A Level = 15% of the mark
AS Level = 30% of the mark
Unit 3 - Controlled Assignment
A Level = 20% of the mark
AS Level = 40% of the mark
Year 2
Unit 4 - Coursework
A Level = 15%
Unit 5 - Personal Study
A Level = 15%
Unit 6 = Controlled Test
A Level = 20%
Course expenses
Materials are paid for as they are required. Additional costs may be incurred upon personal project work. Trips will cost approximately £35.
Trips/Residentials
You will visit local and national galleries as part of your research for your coursework, personal study and exam.
