Sociology

Title & Level: AS/A Level Sociology (Level 3)

Introduction
Sociology looks at people, their experiences and beliefs, how they live their everyday lives and the way those lives are influenced by society. Studying Sociology will help you understand your own experiences and those of others. It will encourage you to look at issues from different perspectives before moving towards an informed view. This course is exam-based only.   

Entry requirements
You should have grade C in GCSE English. You do not need to have studied Sociology before.

Duration
The AS Level is a one year course and the A Level is a two year course. Enrolment is only in September.

Career Prospects/Progression
This course is widely accepted for entry to a broad range of university-level courses. It is also of special value for anyone thinking of a career focusing on people, such as journalism, the health and caring professions, teaching, public administration or business and management.

How will I be assessed?
Examinations.

Course Content/units
AS Level Units:

Unit 1: Families and Households / Culture and identity
Written Paper: 1 hour
Weighting: 40% of total AS / 20% of total A Level marks

Unit 2: Education / Sociological Methods
Written Paper: 2 hours
Weighting: 60% of total AS / 30% of total A Level marks

A2 Level Units:

Unit 3: Beliefs in society / Power and Politics
Written Paper: 1 hour 30 minutes
Weighting: 20% of total A Level marks
Unit 4: Crime and Deviance / Theory and Methods
Written Paper: 2 hours
Weighting 30% of total A Level marks

Course expenses
