Title & Level: GCSE English (Level 2)
Introduction
The aim of the course is to enable you to develop your ability to read and understand all types of writing and to write effectively in a range of styles. You will also develop your skills in speaking and listening. Classes will involve a number of learning methods including group work, pair work, class discussion and individual help from your lecturer. The course is initially structured around the pieces of coursework required and you will build a coursework folder. This comprises pieces of personal writing, both fiction and non-fiction, a response to a Shakespeare play and literary analysis of poetry from other cultures. This will be submitted at the end of the second term. The final term is spent preparing for the end of year examinations, and practising writing in a range of different styles for different audiences. A wide variety of teaching methods are employed, ranging from whole class teaching, group work, individual presentations, analysis of video and audio materials and time exam practice.
Entry requirements
You must have grade D in GCSE English.
Duration
This course is approximately 37 weeks (starting September and ending in May).
Career Prospects/Progression
Many students are keen to gain this qualification as it is considered important by employers. Others decide to continue their studies in this area and go on to take A Level English Language or English Literature, or another subject, having improved their language skills.
How will I be assessed?
Through controlled tests and examinations.
