Introduction
During this course, you will study all aspects of Accounting to prepare you for a career in accountancy or finance-related sectors. The Apprenticeship frameworks are accessible straight from school or employment. In all cases it is advisable that you consider the most appropriate route, taking into account your previous experience, qualifications and current job role.
Entry requirements
You should have achieved a minimum of GCSE English and Maths at grade C or above for the initial Level 2 course and a suitable work placement.
Duration
This is a one year course. Enrolment is only in September.
Career Prospects/Progression
If you successfully complete Level 2, then you may be able to progress on to a Level 3 course. If you pass both levels, plus Functional Skills, you will be qualified to progress onto the Accounting Technician course at Level 4 or university level.
How will I be assessed?
You will take Skills Tests at the end of each accounting unit and
at the end of the course you will sit a central examination which is externally assessed. You will be required to pass your end of course examination before being allowed to progress onto the next level.
The non accounting units are portfolio based and you will need to collect evidence from your work placement.
The Key Skills will be assessed in two parts, dependent on your previous qualifications e.g. GCSE results – (i) a portfolio of evidence to support the application of your basic skills in a job role and (ii) an on-line external test to assess your basic skills.
Course Content/units
To gain the full level 2 NVQ qualification you must successfully complete seven units. Four are skills tested whilst the other three are completed via portfolio work. They are listed as follows:
- Recording income and receipts - Skills test
- Making and recording payments - Skills test
- Preparing ledger balances & an initial trial balance - Skills test
- Supplying information for management control - Skill test
- Working with computers - Portfolio
- Achieving personal effectiveness - Portfolio
- Contribute to the maintenance of a healthy, safe and Portfolio
- Productive working environment
If you are undertaking, or progressing onto level 3, then you will be required to successfully complete five units. They comprise:
- Maintaining financial records and preparing accounts Skills test
- Recording and evaluating costs and revenues - Skills test
- Preparing reports and returns - Skills test
- Working with computers - Portfolio
- Contribute to the maintenance of a healthy, safe and productive working environment - Portfolio
You will be required to take Key Skills if you do not have GCSE Grades C and above in Maths and English.
Course expenses
You may need to buy some text books and there may be a charge if you have to re-sit your end of year examinations more than twice.
