Title & Level: Apprenticeship/Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 2/3) Business Administration

Introduction
The Intermediate Apprenticeship in Business and Administration is aimed at students working in an administrative role, while the Advanced Apprenticeship will help you further develop your knowledge regarding the range of relevant work roles and the personal and interpersonal skills required to work effectively in the sector.

Entry requirements
For the Intermediate Apprenticeship, you need at least grade D in GCSE Maths and English.  For the Advanced Apprenticeship, you need evidence of professional Business Administration skills at Level 2 standard and Functional Skills (English and Maths) or equivalent at Level 1 or above.  You will need to pass an interview for both courses.  You must also either work or have an offer to start working in an appropriate job role by the start of the course.

Duration
The Intermediate course takes approximately 12 months.  The Advanced qualification takes approximately 15.

Career Prospects/Progression
Successful completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship can lead to an Advanced Apprenticeship or, if you would like to move to a supervisory role, a Level 3 qualification in Management.  Completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship can lead to a Higher Apprenticeship linked to a Foundation degree or a Level 3 Management qualification.

How will I be assessed?
The mode of assessment will depend upon the part of the programme you are completing, but will include paper-based assessment, on-line assessment and workplace assessment.

Course Content/units

Intermediate Apprenticeship

This Apprenticeship consists of:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Principles of Business and Administration
  • NVQ Certificate (Level 2) in Business and Administration
  • Level 1 Functional Skill Maths
  • Level 2 Functional Skill in English
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal learning and thinking skills

The theoretical units of this course include:

  • Principles of Personal Responsibilities and Working in a Business Environment
  • Principles of Providing Administrative Services
  • Principles of Managing Information and Producing Documents
  • Principles of Contributing to Innovation and Change

For the practical element of the course, students can choose from a range of units.  Students make use of previous knowledge and experience and build on the knowledge gained during the theoretical parts of the course.  The following units are indicative of a typical Business and Administration programme:

  • Work in a business environment
  • Communication in a business environment
  • Manage own performance in a business environment
  • Improve own performance in a business environment
  • Work with other people in a business environment
  • Produce documents in a business environment
  • Prepare text from notes
  • Make and receive telephone calls

Advanced Apprenticeship

The Advanced course consists of up to six components:

  • Level 3 Certificate in Principles of Business and Administration
  • NVQ Diploma (Level 3) Business and Administration
  • Level 2 Functional Skill Maths
  • Level 2 Functional Skill in English

And, if not already achieved:

  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal learning and thinking skills

For the theoretical element of the course, you will complete four compulsory units and one optional one.  The optional choice is decided with your Programme Leader.

  • Principles of Personal Responsibilities and how to Develop and Evaluate own Performance at Work
  • Principles of Working with and Supervising Others in a Business Environment
  • Principles of Managing Information and Producing Documents in a Business Environment
  • Principles of Providing and Maintaining Administrative Services
  • Principles of Contributing to Innovation and Change

For the practical element of the course, students can choose from a range of units, making use of previous knowledge and experience to build upon what is  learnt during the theoretical element of the course.   The following is indicative of a typical Advanced Business and Administration programme:

  • Work in a business environment
  • Manage own performance in a business environment
  • Evaluate and improve own performance in a business environment
  • Contribute to running a project
  • Communicate in a business environment
  • Use electronic message systems
  • Work with other people in a business environment
  • Supervise a team in a business environment
  • Produce documents in a business environment
  • Solve business problems
  • Contribute to decision-making in a business environment
