This course will develop the necessary skills and experience to become a recognised security installer, specialising in one of the following fields; Security Systems, Access Control, Closed Circuit Television, Fire and Emergency Lighting.
Entry requirements
GCSEs at grade C or above in Maths, Science and English and a placement with a security systems company.
Duration
The Apprenticeship at Level 2 is two years and at Level 3, a further 18 months to 2 years.
Career Prospects/Progression
During the course you will progress from Level 2 to Level 3. You could also go on to study additional modules in Security Surveying and Design or Site Supervision. At the end of the course you will be a qualified Security System Installer.
How will I be assessed?
Your NVQ will be assessed in the workplace as well as in College. Your Technical Certificate will be assessed by end of unit testing, practical and project work.
Course Content/units
The Level 2 course has three mandatory NVQ units which address:
• health and safety
• communication
• effective working relationships
There are four optional units (chosen from a list of five). These cover:
• preparation and arrangements for installation
• installation
• testing and confirming operation
• commissioning and handing over and diagnostic testing
• fault finding
At Level 3 you will complete four mandatory units, plus six optional units, enhancing skills learnt at Level 2 and developing new ones. There is much more emphasis placed on the sales techniques; demonstration of systems; leading teams; controlling contract work and implementing works to meet installation requirements.
Course expenses
Protective clothing and footwear must be supplied.
