Fashion and Textiles

Title & Level: AS/A Level Fashion and Textiles (Level 3)

Introduction
The course aims to develop knowledge and understanding within Textiles and Fashion and to develop finished outcomes underpinning this. The AS Level includes; printmaking, an exploration of dyes onto fabrics and paper using repeat and spot patterns, constructed textiles including felt making, silk paper making, knit, stitch, fashion design and making. In year two you will have the opportunity to carry out a personal study about any aspect of textiles or fashion that interests you.

Entry requirements
Standard entry requirements for A Levels apply, including grade C in GCSE Art or Textiles and a keen interest in the subject.

Duration
The AS Level is one year and the A Level is two years. Enrolment is only in September.

Career Prospects/Progression
This course is good preparation if you intend to apply for an Art Foundation course to build a portfolio for University. Some students may apply direct to university or pursue a career in a related field in Creative Industries.

How will I be assessed?
Coursework units and exam will be moderated.

Course Content/units
Two units will be undertaken in Year 1.  Unit 1 is coursework where emphasis is on practical experimentation and links to designers.  Unit 2 is an exam paper of 20 set questions which you will choose to develop a body of work around.

Year 2 also contains 2 units.  The theme of the first is chosen and developed by you in an area you wish to specialise much deeper in.  This is backed up with a thorough study of artists, designers or production techniques associated with your chosen area.  Unit 2 is an externally set exam as per Year 1.

Course expenses
Approximately £70 for the majority of fabric and textiles used during the year.  Trips cost in the region of £40, with the opportunity to attend a residential in Europe (optional).  You should provide your own fabric cutting scissors.

Trips/Residentials
Previous trips have included the National Clothes Show at Birmingham NEC and visits to Paris, the home of Haute Couture Fashion.
