Communication and Culture

Title & Level: AS/A Level Communication and Culture (Level 3)

Introduction
During this course, you will look at how we communicate, how others communicate with us and cultural influences on our ability to communicate. Areas covered include; How do we communicate using non-verbal and verbal communication? How do music and subcultures influence popular culture? Are opera and ballet more valuable art forms than popular music?

Entry requirements
Standard entry requirements, including grade C in GCSE English. You should have an interest in communication skills and want to develop your creativity and imagination. Good literacy skills, a broad general knowledge and an interest in a range of media would be an advantage.

Duration
The AS Level course is a one year course and the A Level course is a two year course. Enrolment is only in September.

Career Prospects/Progression
This qualification is particularly relevant to Communication and Media degrees, but will give you access to a wide range of Higher Education courses. Past students have progressed to employment in areas including law, the Armed Forces, the broadcast media, marketing, office and retail management. There may be an opportunity for a full A Level, subject to numbers.

How will I be assessed?
Through Coursework, continuous assessments and examinations.

Course Content/units
Unit One

Understanding Communication and Culture (50% of marks)
Written Paper 1hr 45 mins consisting of two questions about Culture and Communication
Two questions on guided analysis of cultural practices and a text

Unit Two

The Individual and Contemporary Culture: Portfolio (50% of total marks)
Independent work on Communication and Cultural Practices, including an original study and a presentation with visual and oral components.

Course expenses
Approximately £10 for text books and £20 for educational trips.

Trips/Residentials
Possible trip to the Saatchi Gallery, London.
