Entry Requirements
Standard entry requirements plus grade A or B in GCSE Additional Science or GCSE Biology (Higher Tier) and GCSE English.

Duration
AS Level is a one year course and A Level is a two year course. Enrolment is only in September.

Career Prospects/Progression
After this course, you can apply for Higher Education or employment.  Many university courses require A Level Biology, including Medicine, Veterinary Science, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Environmental Science and more.  The skills you gain during this course are valuable and could also be considered when applying for non-science degree courses.

How will I be assessed?
Moderated exams and externally marked coursework.

Course Content/units
During the first year, you will study the first module and sit a written exam in January.  The second module exam is usually planned for the end of May.  Coursework, which involves drawing skills, experimental design and analysis of results, takes place during normal lessons and makes up 20% of the AS Level months.  The same pattern is followed in the second year, culminating in a full A Level qualification.

Biology Units:

BY1 – Basic Biochemistry and Cell Structure
BY2 – Biodiversity and Physiology of Body Systems
BY3 – Practical Assessment
BY4 – Metabolism, Microbiology and Homeostasis
BY5 – Environment, Genetics and Evolution
BY6 – Practical Assessment

Course expenses
Mandatory ecological field trip for all AS students (£10).  Optional foreign field trip in August.  Previous destinations have included Malaysia, Borneo, The Bahamas, Sir Lanka, Costa Rica, Tanzania, New Zealand, Vietnam, Australia, Sothern Africa, Belize and Uganda.

Although text books are available, revision books are recommended and titles will be suggested at the beginning of the course.
