Gifted and Talented

Gifted and Talented Opportunities

Stretch and Challenge
If you have been identified as a Gifted and Talented student by your school or college, we aim to extend your area of expertise and excellence through challenge, individual support and monitoring.  You will work with your personal tutor to set challenging targets for yourself.  Lecturers will provide support to ensure you have sufficient stretch and challenge and the Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator will monitor your progress.

University Opportunities
Many of our students are successful in gaining places at universities across the country including Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Southampton and other Russell Group institutions. You will be given lots of support and advice as you make your university choices and as you complete your UCAS application. Your personal tutor and the College’s HE consultant, as well as subject specialists, will be available to help you with your application and personal statement. You will have the opportunity to visit universities during open days, including Oxford and Cambridge, take part in university information sessions at College during the year and the Higher Education Day in the summer term.

You will be encouraged to visit universities, apply for Sutton Trust Summer Schools, take part in activities organised by the South West Excellence Hub and participate in subject-specific university courses, such as Medlink (for potential medical students) and other university-run taster courses. You will be given plenty of support and practice interviews if you choose to apply to Oxford or Cambridge. If your chosen course has an aptitude test (such as the LNAT for Law), you will be given lots of guidance and practice opportunities.

Additional Tuition
You may be offered additional tuition in a number of AS subjects including Chemistry, Biology, Physics, English, History and Psychology. These sessions will enhance your grade, provide access to extension papers, as well as prepare you for University entrance exams and interviews.

Two students studying

Last year, more than 230 Yeovil College students gained places at universities across the country, including Oxford, King's College, Bristol, Reading, Manchester, Cardiff, Plymouth and Bournemouth.  Many students also excel at our own University Centre Yeovil (UCY), on Preston Road.  Here you can benefit from studying locally and gaining a foundation or Honours degree.  For more information, visit the www.ucy.ac.uk

AQA Baccalaureate
As a Gifted and Talented student, you might want to enrol on the AQA Baccalaureate (Bacc) which will give you the opportunity to develop your academic ability and other skills in more depth. The four aspects of this qualification ensure academic challenge and breadth of experience.

AS Level Critical Thinking
This is a subject that extends and develops analytical and lateral thinking. It is relevant to every other curriculum area and may enhance your overall academic performance. You may be invited to study this subject during your second year or complete it as part of the AQA Bacc.

AS/A Level Further Maths
You will be encouraged to take this subject if you are an able mathematician. This is a huge advantage in the study of Science and Maths subjects at University. More information about this course is available from our A Level pages.
