Title & Level: AS/A Level Government and Politics (Level 3)

Introduction
This course encourages you to take a lively and critical interest in all aspects of the current political scene. You will explore and discuss the here and now, the big issues affecting the lives of you and everyone in this country, how we are governed, how elections are won and lost and the impact of the EU.

Entry requirements
You should have grade C or above in English GCSE.

Duration
As Level is one year and A Level is two years. Enrolment is in September only. 

Career Prospects/Progression
Following this course, you can progress to A Levels in related subjects, such as Law, Sociology, History, English or languages.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through examination.

Course Content/units
The course consists of the following units:

Unit 1 - Politics of the UK - Focussing on the theme of political behaviours in the UK, this unit explores how people's different patterns of participation can be explained and the forms of participation in a democracy.  The importance of voting behaviour, the influence of electoral systems in communicating political opinion and the controversies surrounding the use of referendums are crucial topics for analysis.  The four topics covered in this unit are: Participation and Voting Behaviour, Electoral Systems, Political Parties and Pressure Groups and Protest Movements.

Unit 4 - The Government of the USA - For this unit, you will examine the constitutional framework of the US Government, the Legislative Branch of Government (US Congress), the Executive Branch of Government and the Judicial Branch of Government (The Supreme Court).

Course expenses
£15 for a trip to Parliament and costs of residential.

Trips/Residentials
There is a visit to Parliament.
