PGCE Year 1
Title & Level: Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
Introduction
This two-year course is run in conjunction with the University of the West of England and is designed to provide a professional teaching qualification for lecturers and trainers working in the post 16 learning and skills sector for the equivalent of six hours per week. There is no interim certification at the end of Year 1, and therefore it is essential that all potential learners talk through the course options with the course manager before enrolment. The course is appropriate for graduates or those with similar levels of professional/vocational qualifications in the subject they intend to teach.
Entry requirements
Learners must show evidence that they have a reasonable expectation of completing the course, and they are required to have an appropriate professional qualification in their selected field. A Level 2 qualification in both literacy and numeracy. Learners will need access to a minimum of 150 hours of teaching in each of the two years and an ability to work at Levels 5 and 6.
Duration
One evening per week for three hours in Year 1, plus additional tutorials and teaching observations. In Year 2, one day per week.
Careers prospects/progression
Year 2 must follow immediately after.
How will I be assessed?
By portfolio, assignments continually assessed, a teaching practice portfolio and three teaching practice observations, one by a subject specialist.
Course content/units
Year 1 concentrates on the practical aspects of teaching & learning. Learners will be observed teaching a minimum of three times in each of the two years.
An additional fee of £40 will be charged if you require workplace observation further than 15 miles from Yeovil.
