You will study a broad range of topics including health and safety, communications and working relationships, preparing and operating equipment and machinery and developing design responses for a variety of production stages for the print market. Yeovil College offers Apprenticeships in specific strands. Which strand you take will be based upon your employer and job role. At Level 2 and 3, you can study Machine Printing - Flexography, Machine Printing - Gravure, Machine Printing - Lithography, Machine Printing - Web Offset, Mechanised Print Finishing and Binding and Newspaper and Periodicals. Carton Manufacture, Digital Print Production - Digital Artwork for Print Pre-Press and Print Administration are available at Level 3.
Entry requirements
You should have a work placement relevant to your chosen career route, an interest and enthusiasm for your work and the determination to succeed and progress. A reasonable standard of English and Maths is required, but support is available.
Duration
The course will vary in length dependent on your previous knowledge and experience, the particular route and level chosen, and time allowed from work for study. As a general guide, you should complete a Level 2 (apprenticeship) within 18 months and a Level 3 (advanced apprenticeship) within 24 months.
Career Prospects/Progression
After Level 2, you can progress to a Level 3 course in an appropriate area. At either level, you can continue to work in the industry.
How will I be assessed?
Through continuous assessment by observations in the workplace, personal statements of competence, portfolio of evidence, end of module/unit tests and project work. A qualified College Assessor will visit you in your workplace to assess your practical skills whilst you are working in your job role.
There are three technical certificate modules each of which will be concluded by an exam. You will need to pass these exams to gain the full technical certificate. The Key Skills will be assessed in two parts, dependent on your previous qualifications e.g. GCSE results:
(1) a written portfolio of evidence in support of how you apply your Basic Key Skills in a job role and
(2) an on-line external test to assess your Basic Key Skills ability.
The Apprenticeship at Level 2 consists of: An NVQ in your chosen pathway - Desk Top Publishing or Machine Printing or Pre-Press or Mechanised and Print Finishing and Binding or Print Administration.
- A Technical Certificate at Level 2 - City and Guild’s Certificate in Printing and Graphic Communication
- Key Skills in Application of Number, Communications and Problem Solving
- Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
You should be employed and trained by your employer to complete certain practical tasks. These every day tasks should fit with the NVQ standards. You may be required to attend Yeovil College one day a fortnight for your off-the-job training. This will include how to put together a portfolio of evidence gathered from your workplace in support of your NVQ, which may include photographic evidence, a witness testimony from your employer or objects of production in written paper form. Theory sessions will provide the necessary underpinning knowledge and understanding of the practical activity; this is often in the form of projects and assignments. Key Skills will be taught as a separate subject. Practical training will be carried out in the workplace. In classroom sessions, you will have formal lectures, one-to-one tutorials, practical exercises, projects, group work and research. Regular feedback sessions and 12-weekly progress reviews with your employer and Training Co-ordinator will assist you with your progress and motivation.
Course expenses
There are no additional expenses for books, materials and equipment, but there may be a charge if you are required to re-sit your Technical Certificate more than once.
