What do I do now?

Self Advocacy
Students will learn to be more self aware and to speak up for themselves in a variety of situations.  These skills will be practised through role play and practical activities.

Public speaking
Cookery

Healthy Cookery
This is an evening course where students will practise preparing and making simple healthy snacks and meals.  Students will build up a collection of recipes that they can use at home with support.

 

Independent Living
This is a course for people who are living independently or who are working towards this.  The course will include shopping, cooking, domestic skills and learning how to manage money

Preparing food
  Doing the washing

Towards Independence
This is a course for people who are in supported living and would like to be more independent at home.  The course will include shopping, domestic skills, cooking simple snacks and accessing the community for leisure

 

Communications
Students will practise communication skills through speech, sign, symbols and pictures

Learning with cards

Movement and Brain Gym
Learners will participate in exercise and movement to improve co-ordination and motor skills.  Learners will be able to follow simple exercises that they may practise at home

 

Personal Social Development (PSD)
Students will work through personal goals to improve physical, emotional and social wellbeing.  They will look at their place in the community and how they can make a positive contribution to society.

Basic Skills Courses

 

All Basic Skills courses are free of tuition charges.  However, there is a charge of £20 per person per course to cover resources.

Literacy
This course covers all aspects of Literacy at Entry level.  Learners will practise reading, writing, speaking and listening skills

Numeracy
This course includes handling money, time, measuring and handling data at Entry level

Life Skills Courses

 

The following courses will enable learners to enjoy a more relaxed approach while working on their personal and social skills goals.

There is a fee of £158 for these two hour courses (with the exception of Horticulture which is a 4 hour course and will cost £316). However learners in receipt of means tested benefits will be eligible for fee remission.  In addition, all courses have a resource fee of £20 per person for each course.

Coping with Emergencies
The course will cover household safety, personal first aid and where to find help in an emergency.

 

Personal Safety
Students will gain a better awareness of personal safety at home and when out in the community

 
Student experience in the local community

Community Awareness
Students will experience using facilities within the college and the local community. Learners will gain an awareness of their local community and how to access it.

Vocational Courses

 

Customer Service
This course is for people who are employed or working towards employment.  You will practise the skills needed to provide a good service to your customers

Making phone calls 

Work Preparation
This course is designed for learners who are preparing to commence work or work placements.  The course will cover presentation, personal hygiene, time-keeping and organisational skills.

Horticulture
Students will recognise a variety of common plants and shrubs and learn how to look after them. They will also learn how to use tools safely.

Gardening for Pleasure
For students who would like to learn more about plants and how to look after them.

Enterprise
Learners aim to form a company and make and sell items to make a profit. You will learn about the retail industry and about manufacturing. Learners get the opportunity to use creative talents to produce stock to sell
