Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector

Title & Level: Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) Level 3

Introduction
PTLLS is a part time course for those who are starting to teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector.  It is the minimum requirement for anyone employed in the teaching of adults in any part of the sector and is available to those not yet employed who wish to find out more about teaching.  It gives participants an overview of the sector and the challenges it presents for those who teach in it.

The course is the first step in the route to qualified teacher status for people working with learners over the age of 14.  It is designed for people who have no experience of teaching at all and you do not need to be in a teaching post in order to do it.

It will provide its participants with an essential foundation of information upon which to build and develop their skills as teachers in later courses.

Offered at Level 3, it is not recognised as a teaching qualification in its own right but allows access to further qualifications that are.

Entry requirements
Potential candidates need to be able to demonstrate Level 2 (GCSE level) literacy, numeracy and IT skills.  These will be discussed at an informal interview before enrolment. Opportunities are available to develop these skills further if required.  The college offers a wide range of programmes to encourage the development of these skills to Level 2.

Applications are welcomed from all interested parties who wish to try their hand at teaching adults in any context.  In particular, we welcome applications from male and ethnic minority groups who are currently under represented in the sector.

All potential candidates must complete an application form and meet a tutor for an informal interview before they can be enrolled on the course.

Duration
PTLLS is a 30 hour course that is being delivered as:

  • A 10 week course of 3 hours per week starting in September
  • A series of  5 consecutive Mondays starting in October and March
  • A one week full time course available in December and July

Careers prospects/progression
